MUNDAY MERMON: Bruce Lee

a day late…

ok so i was feeling kinda self-conscious about wanting to post bruce lee as my first sunday sermon because i felt like it would be like “well of course the ASIAN mathafacka in the crew is gonna post bruce lee!” well, those fears are invalidated for these reasons three:

1) i just finished organizing the 2009 asian pacific islander american spoken word & poetry summit and it was so dope, i could give a fuuuuuuuuuux what you have to say about my chinese-ass-bruce-lee-posting-ass self.

2) even if i did care, i think it’s just dumb for people to call all asians “bruce lee” like as if it were an insult.  dude was hella strong and hella smart.  i’d be so honored to be genuinely mistook  as bruce lee.  i mean, does anyone go out trying to be racist by calling all black people  “james baldwin?” and if so, would that even be offensive?

Two fictional dialogues to stress my point:

Racist guy #1: Hey you!  Yeah you!  You must be Bruce Lee because all Asians do kung-fu!

Asian guy: What???  Don’t EVER say that about me and my people!  You’re so racist!

—————

Racist guy #2: Hey you!  Yeah you!  You must be James Baldwin because all black people write short fiction!

Black guy: What???…the fuck are you talking about?

Fin

3) i’m not even the only asian guy in ill-lit.  nico is just as asian as me (but still, only half the man).

bruce is great.  rest of the interview after the jump.
