Today’s Mandatory Monday goes to the almighty David Bowie, and though I’ve posted him before, I’d like to shift the focus from his amazing music to his personal life (however separated or unseparated that is). What amazes me about him is that, despite once being the biggest star in the world, he manages to maintain a great relationship with his family, continuously grows and expands his art, and hasn’t gone haywire from balancing all of it (as un-haywire as a guy who’s spent a substantial amount of time rocking 10-inch heels, that is). And he’s married to IMAN!! He consistently refers to himself as a “writer,” and doesn’t seem fazed by any of the amazing things that has happened in his life – just thankful. Papa Lo sent me this link to a letter that was just unearthed…one he wrote to his first American fan back when he was still virtually unknown. It shows a curious maturity even as a fledgling performer:

As you can see in one of his more recent interviews, he’s still brilliant, and still has his head on straight. Definitely one of my all-time heroes. Long live Bowie.
