Between the new Gorillaz and Erykah Badu albums coming out, I must say that spring is looking up to become a glorious musical season, what say you? I’ve been steadily pumping Demon Days and the self-titled record this past week. I’ve always appreciated Gorillaz for being able to carry their characters and narrative for this long. Here’s “Superfast Jellyfish” featuring Gruff Rhys and De La Soul. You love it.
Gorillaz do just make life better, don’t they?

iLL-Literacy @ SXSW info: The Audible Treats Showcase
Posted by drizzletron ·March 11th, 2010 · News, iLL-Shows

SXSW is approaching quickly…the show is beginning to take shape…THE PRESSURE IS ON!! One thing I’ve learned during my episode on this earth is that as wack as procrastination is, there’s nothing like a close deadline to bring out the best in us. More rehearsal footage coming soon, but if you’re gonna be in Austin come check out our show! It’s our only performance at SXSW, so get it while it’s hot!
Click HERE for more info on the Audible Treats showcase.

Apt. 1LL: iLL-Lit Rehearsing “Finding Emo” Day 1
Posted by drizzletron ·March 10th, 2010 · Apt. 1LL, Video
Welcome to Apt. 1LL which, serendipitously, is our actual apartment number! Well, I might have bought an extra L at the handy shop…but it looks official, dammit! Anyway, Apt. 1LL is our series of rehearsal and recording footage that we’ll be posting up as our next step toward showing you the process behind our projects. A transparent administration, I say! Here’s our first day practicing Finding Emo for SXSW. Enjoy!

MGMT’s “Flash Delirium” is more great Fraggle Rock music

I pretty much only want to listen to music that sounds like it could’ve been in a Disney movie.

“For Your Sorrows” is everything a video with Big Boi, George Clinton, and Too $hort should be.
Posted by drizzletron ·March 10th, 2010 · Under the Influence, Video
There are so many reasons why I like this video, but can we establish the fact that the footage of the 6-year-old girl looking like she’s trying to move a refrigerator with her hips at 3:18 is not one of them?? But everything else…the trippy kaleidoscope George Clinton, Big Boi being Big Boi, and Too $hort is GRAYING!! And still his shortness leaves him dissatisfied. But this video wont. Steady waiting for that Sir Luscious Leftfoot.

FUTURE OF THE FUNK: Stickybits
Posted by drizzletron ·March 10th, 2010 · Video, future of the funk

The unchallenged monkeybread* maker known as Josh Begley hipped me to this dope new app that could change the face of the PLANET!!!!!! Well, maybe not the face, but at least the creative side of the world. The boootayy. Stickybits is a program that allows you to attach photos, words, videos, and music to any barcode. Imagine the possibilities! Scan a can of peas in the grocery store and get a free album that an aspiring artist threw on there earlier that day! Or a picture of a clown. A scary scary clown. I showed Stickybits to Dahlak just now and he looked at me like “why are you showing me such troubling things before I sleep?” Yeah, perhaps it’s a bit Orwellian. But everything carries memory and energy. Why not download it? Welcome to the future.
*get it? stickybits of pastry!

Still one of my favorite emcees out, Denizen Kane sits down with Visual Crunch to discuss his new album, Brother Jin’s Journey to the West. Okay, back to work.

TUESDAY TOSS UP: On learning the MPC
Posted by drizzletron ·March 9th, 2010 · News, Tuesday Toss Up, Under the Influence, Video

When I was in the 6th grade I attended Marching On, my school district’s annual musical. I saw all the 5th graders who had taken percussion over the course of the past year, and thought to myself “Dammit, the Drizzletron! You should’ve taken percussion! Now it’s too late, you old fogey!” (I continue to use the word fogey) Since then, I’ve surrendered a number of potential skills due to thinking that I was “too old” – DJing, breakdancing, guitar, and muffin making come to mind right now. Of course, the notion of being “too old” is a farce, unless you’re talking about getting your diaper changed for you. Ah yes, there comes a certain point in every young adult’s life when they must learn to change their own diaper…otherwise it’s just creepy.
With that said, I’ve decided to take up the MPC (a digital drum machine that enlists the use of samples). I’ve been tangoing with it for the last 5-odd years, but my insecurities with keeping a rhythm (pshh, Asians) has deterred me from doing much more than the sound effects I played for the opening song in ’08’s Natural Electricity Tour.
But HARK! The pre-SXSW atomic explosion of a rehearsal space that used to be our living room:

With so many musical robots staring you at the face, how does one resist plugging their fingers into their sonic sweetnesses? One does not. And so I’m finally ignoring all the hindrances set by my offbeat discoordination, and getting down. I’ve got 8 days to get good enough to impress at the country’s largest music conference. I WON’T NOT HAPPEN! Rehearsal footage coming soon, via Rafael Casal’s suggestion.
And though I may have years to go before I get to connoisseur status, one can always dream of becoming a master. My latest source of inspiration? Fellow golden earthling Nosaj Thing:
Damn thy angelic fingers!
