I’m a huge fan of the homie Bambu.  Truly one of the first emcees I gravitated to that balances politics with artistry, each project has gotten better while still maintaining the integrity of the message. For “Old Man Raps,” he goes in.  With the aid of Xylophone Films, this video takes a snapshot inside the mind of Bam as he reflects on the possible future of his baby son Kahlil.  Beautifully shot, beautifully song, and Bam’s pretty ass has some acting skills!  Whooda thunk? Shit’s fire.

We quite literally wouldn’t have made it here without our fellow Brooklyn-based-Cali-transplant KJ Butta.  Besides providing one of the most comfortable couches I’ve ever crashed on while we were looking for our spot upon our arrival from our epic road trip, he is also the owner of the dopest, most inspiring collection of 80′s media, including but not limited to an actual Captain Eo DVD. But even more fantastically, he’s one of the greatest DJs on both coasts, and can be found many a night at the Meatpacking District’s POP Burger.  Definitely one of our most supportive friends, and any given night you can hear him throwing the good peoples that you might normally hear in a club, such as Bambu, Blue Scholars, and even that one crew iLL-Lit.  Here’s a new mix he wove together entitled Good Breakfast Eatin’ and it’s setting my morning off right.  Your turn.

Pnoy Apparel has the same effect on me that Fubu used to have when it was the hot shit — it would make me start to think to myself, “Man, I wish I was [insert ethnicity here] so I could rock that…” when all of a sudden Chairman Mao would appear with one hand shaking his finger at me, and the other holding Bruce Lee’s six-pack tattooed with the phrase, You can have one of these if you just remain patient.  

Not to say that Pnoy Apparel and Fubu are anything alike though…you won’t see any PA stuff with Fat Albert all over it in the clearance rack at TJ Maxx.  And also, unlike Fubu, if you were at the flea market and found a Pnoy Apparel shirt where all the Fs were replaced with Ps, that would actually mean that it’s more real. **winks at Maganda staff**

Their new limited edition REVOLT hoodies are helllllla tight.  The detail across the entire thing is magnificent, and the designers did a fantastic job of figuring out how to wear a flag without looking like Rex Kwan Do.

Dear Bambu,
On this day, sitting at PapaLo’s dining room table, full from a dinner she cooked me of a quesadilla with an egg on top (WTF)  while her roommate explains why Steve Jobs knows everything about my life, I wonder: when can I be one of the guys that stands around you while you rap in videos?  I think I’d be a great stander.  That is all.

I’m not really sure why Bambu hangs out with me.  I’m pretty sure if we were in a non-hip hop community atmosphere and/or met in middle school, he would’ve kicked my ass daily, or at least weekly.  Or at least made fun of the neon green shorts I wore to class everyday in the 5th grade, but only after P.E..  Luckily, we have hip hop, and Bam does not kick my ass and we have a healthy relationship where we can sick our blogreaders on each other for cross promo.

Ahhhhh spring is in the air…the weather’s getting warmer, and you know what that means…MINISKIRTS AND UGGS!!!  It also means the infamous Hip Hop in the Park is back, and this year the lineup is hotter than ever with the iLL-homies Bambu and Blu & Exile on the bill.  What more could you ask for?  Oh, an iLL ass Filipina hosting the whole shindig, perhaps?  Gadzooks, Ruby’s emceeing the whole thing!  Watch her spit at the crowd and shout “What the bloodclot!?!?”…it’s not to be missed.
