I must admit, P-Funk…it’s hard for me to accept the fact that your name’s P-Funk. Because you’re named after the music that has completely shifted the way I live my life. AndC Plus…it’s hard for me to accept the fact that your name’s C Plus. Because you’re named after the grade I consistently got in trigonometry class, and I’d normally beef with anyone who makes me think about tangents. I hate tangents! Speaking of Michael Jackson, here’s a kid really really feeling his music:
At any rate, this track is raw as hell, as well as the gentlemen who are the culprits of the vocals. Digit!

So you win this round, rappers with names that could get mixed up for other people or things! Psh, I’m glad I don’t have that problem. Nope, I’m just plain ol’ Drizzy. And I’m the fuckin’ best.
Pretty much for as long as I’ve been familiar with the term “d-bag,” I’ve felt that only true d-bags actually use the term “d-bag.” With that said, I felt like a real d-bag when I started using “d-bag” a lot, thanks to that one d-bag from State Cap, A.V., who toured with us and the Hi-Lifes last fall as our guitarist, and who was also the d-bag responsible for implementing “d-bag” into our daily conversation. Okay, now I just feel like a straight up douche.
Anyway, I was perusing SoHo with the iLLs yesterday when A.V. hit me up allllll the way from his new home in Mississippi to make me feel utterly useless, being that even while relocated to the South, he still managed to push out a mixtape with the rest of State Cap in Sac and SF. And it is the HEAT! Check out “Star of Wonder.”

Yo, we feel like that kid in school that has to finish his paper while everyone else is enjoying recess…there’s soooooooo muuuuuuuch music being put out and we’re only a month into the year! Here’s a new mixtape from Neighborhood Watch member C-Plus, who you might recognize as the dude spitting fire on the third verse of Dahlak’s “Welcome To My Cypher.” His new mixtape The Warm-Up is just what you need for this ridonculous winter. Here’s a taste, “What I Know.”
Here we gooooo…told y’all that the music was gonna start rolling in! Those of you who caught us on the Natural Electricity tour this past fall will recognize this cut as Drizz’s outro to Dahlak and N.I.C’s “Never Know.” On tour we threw it behind the 808’s on Kanye’s “Love Lockdown,” but for the feel “Coldest Winter” was the biz so we updated it in light of the recent weeks and laid it to track. Enjoy!
IT BEGINS!! The floodgates are opening, there’s plenty of music dropping this year from our extended fam, and we’ll be bringing it to you quicker than you can say shababalapoobie. Our iLL-homie 5th Ave. (Dahlak’s fellow co-founder of The Neighborhood Watch) and Jon Reyes (producer of some hotttttt iLL-shit coming up soon!) are dropping their EP entitled The Delorean! Yes, as in flux capacitor Doc Brown your fly is open McFlyness. Check it out. Don’t be a Biff.
Yo, our iLL-homie 5th Ave has been pumping out music like Lauryn Hill pumps out babies, who pumps out babies like Lil Wayne pumps out music. This month he’ll be dropping the Bright City Lights EP, and WE have the official leak! We can’t shoot you the whole thing quite yet, but here’s the very very fresh opening track, “Let the Moon Shine Dawg.” Still sounds good during the daytime.
SACRAMENTO STAND UP! Our hometown favorites State Cap are celebrating the release of their brand new mixtape, Where Is State Cap? tonight at Java Lounge in Sacramento! Yeah, it’s a bit of a last-minute notice…so for those of you who can’t make it to the city of trees, here’s a track called “Gotta Know” from the joint, featuring your boy Dahlak:
As much as we do as iLL-Literacy, the Neighborhood Watch–our Sacramento cousin collective that Dahlak’s also a part of–grinds hard enough to put the greatest of workaholics to shame. Next up to the plate is the ridiculously dope crew State Cap, comprised of A.v. aka Judge Dread bka Sammy Hi-Life cka the badass guitarist in the iLL-Literacy ensemble, C Plus (dude that ripped the third verse in Dahlak’s “Welcome to My Cypher”), and superfreshboys Hanlin and Bosse, both of whom’s styles we jock.
Check out their delicious new single, “In Due Time,” from their upcoming Where is State Cap? mixtape, dropping August 23:
Congratulations to Dahlak for taking home the award for Hip-Hop Artist of the Year for Sacramento News & Review’s SAMMIES! Oh Dahlak, how proud you make us, winning awards back home while grinding on the other side of the country. A shout out to the rest of the talented nominees, especially our iLL-Homies State Cap and Tribe of Levi! And a very special thank you to allllllllll the beautiful people who took the time to vote. Much love!

iLL-Literacy + the Hi-Lifes rehearsal
After a 3-month hiatus, the iLL-Literacy + Hi-Lifes contingent reconvened at the rehearsal studio of the Hi-Life’s newest member, DJ Flow. Oh yes, it feels so good to be back where we belong (and yes, that’s a line from New Edition).
