The stage is iLL-Literacy’s first home. When we first began as a spoken word collective, all we had was the mic. Our stories got bigger than what words could hold, and through the years we picked and poked at our show, experimenting off-Broadway in the theater world, playing with live instruments in music festivals, and honing our craft while touring college campuses. The result is a schizophrenic presentation as absurd as the world we’ve come to know. Throughout our show, we use vocal narrative, pound on drum machines, hack digital projections of psychedelic visuals, and sometimes wear giant Lego helmets. This shit cray.
Our adventures have taken us to the SxSW Music Conference, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the American University of Paris, and hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the world. We’ve shared lineups with some of our favorite artists, including Saul Williams, Blue Scholars, Black Star, and Janelle Monáe.
